A small two-storey cottage with large rear garden had a number of dilapidated outbuildings to the rear. To generate the open plan living arrangements desired by our clients, this project simply removes the various constructions to the rear and utilises a similar footprint, with a one storey living pavilion stretching along the garden to maximize solar energy gains and a master bedroom over. The entrance is moved to the rear garden, through a sequence incorporating a private courtyard, walled garden and new front entrance with stair to the upper storey. This relieves the original house of the need for stairs and allows the original house to be opened up to gain more space for storage and bedrooms.
